Hidden Links in PHPlist

PHPlist, the OS newsletter manager, reminds me once again why I check source code and remove links.

Not content with credit links throughout the software and emails (which you are asked not to remove), on the /admin/about.php page of the install:

<!-- some google bombing, who knows, might work :-) -->

<div style="display:none">
<a href="http://www.phplist.com">Newsletter</a><a href="http://www.phplist.com">Newsletter Manager</a><a href="http://www.phplist.com">Open Source Newsletter</a><a href="http://www.phplist.com">Open Source Newsletter Manager</a><a href="http://www.phplist.com">Opt In</a><a href="http://www.phplist.com">Opt In Marketing</a><a href="http://www.phplist.com">Double Opt In Marketing</a><a href="http://www.phplist.com">Newsletter Software</a><a href="http://www.phplist.com">Mailinglist</a><a href="http://www.phplist.com">Permission Marketing</a>
</div>

OK everyone has to make some money but hidden links are just going to annoy me. PHPlist have a responsibility not to cross any SE guidelines, a smiley at the end just doesn’t cut it. At least the embedded links are to them and not third parties but stunts like this loose my trust and make me wonder what they will “experiment” with next.

You can see the code in action on their demo install

P.S. The admin options in the software only let you change the PHPlist image link to a text link, not to remove them altogether. If you want to do that you have to manually remove them in admin/connect.php, and then clean up about.php.

  1. That’s definitely unethical.

  2. There’s some problem apparently:

    Warning: in_array() [function.in-array]: Wrong datatype for second argument in plugins/subscribe-to-comments.php on line 433

    **NW** Thanks for dropping by Justin and for the heads up about the comment error, much appreciated. I’ve uploaded the newest copy of the WordPress subscribe to comments plugin and it all seems to be working fine now.

  3. was looking for this , thanks.
