Free Belgium .be domains for all

Nick Wilsdon · November 1st, 2005

This offer is now closed - sorry folks. You are welcome to register your .be domain at our normal low prices.

Switzerland is immediately associated with banking, clocks and mountains, Holland with tulips, cheese and wind-mills. For Belgium, we have chocolate, Leffe - possibly the best beer in the World - Ever
Hercule Poirot and in my opinion the best beer in the world.

Belgium has the highest “quality of life” in the world, as testified by its excellent food, housing, health care, education and infrastructure, its world records for high productivity and low poverty. With a mix of French and Dutch speakers they border the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France and were one of the founding members of the European Union. The capital city, Brussels hosts the European Parliament.

Now you have your chance to own a little part of Belgium. Their Registry (.be) is promoting their TLD extension by offering completely free registration from today to the 31st of January 2006.

We’ll be handling this promotion, as agents for the Belgium Registry. There are no restrictions to owning a .be domain; they will even let you Americans join in the fun.

Not too keen on promoting yourself in Belgium? Well keep in mind this is more than just an extension, this is part of a phrase. We haven’t had this much fun since the Italian Registry (.it) opened their books. Here are the e3internet office top 10 .be domain names /web site ideas.

  1. Just.be-Woman Lifestyle Magazine
  2. Letit.be- Beatles Fan Club
  3. Can.be- Career Advice
  4. Always.be- Memorial Hosting
  5. Community.be- Web 2.0. ‘Remix’
  6. Honey.be- Pet name for the Wife/Girlfriend
  7. Wanna.be- Blogger C-lists
  8. Attack-of-the-killer.be- Terrible B-movie
  9. Freeto.be- SMS/Moblogging service
  10. Not-to.be- Failed Web 2.0. Project Archive

Any other suggestions folks?

Sorry guys, we have got a bit over-stretched here with requests. We are moving the site/form to a faster server and will re-open this shortly.

It seems that several (all) of the other registrars that were offering this have also stopped, which contributed to our load here.

    LOL, now you’re nasty-as-you-wanna.be

All kidding aside, does it make sense to register a domain you will have to renew for FAR higher than the going rate?

  • 30 Nick // Nov 2, 2005 at 7:46 pm

    Hi Duzin,

I’m actually very interested in this. I’d like to hear your thoughts if you have time.

I’ll give you my perspective here first. We’re not the largest Registrar in the world, certainly not the size of Godaddy etc. We buy our .be domains from our wholesalers at $15. I have them for sale here at £16.50 (approx. $29). We’re making $15 for the year.

From our end, we provide email support. In some cases even telephone support. We make sure the domains don’t expire and that you can talk to a real person if you need to. We don’t charge for changing name servers or transfers away. The girls here often make changes to domains on behalf of our clients.

I know Godaddy charges $17.49. They buy at the same price as us pretty much. The reason they can afford to do this is the quantity of course, and also they get to sell hosting in the deal. Most domains are sold now as a taster for the hosting, they make no money in themselves.

What would you feel is a reasonable price for a .be domain?

  • 31 Angsuman Chakraborty // Nov 2, 2005 at 7:55 pm

    Here are few more:

    tu.be
    stro.be
    pro.be
    ro.be

But jokes aside I remember buying taragana.com initially for 70$ for 2 years. Yes as far as .be domains are concerned I think you are chargeing less than godaddy, which pretty much should mean everybody else.

BTW: How long does the free part last?

  • 32 Nick // Nov 2, 2005 at 7:56 pm

Apologies if we suddently go offline or posts dissappear. We’re literally about to swap servers here for e3internet.

If that happens I’ll copy from database backup.

  • 33 Nick // Nov 2, 2005 at 8:00 pm

Heh - Yes Angsuman, the prices have certainly come down. At the company I worked at in ‘97, we got our domain by emailing the owner of the local ISP. It cost about £250!

We are working here on automating things more - that brings the costs down. I do like my staff (and me) being able to give a high level of support to our clients. You can never automate that really, or you end up like Easyspace (I swear they have their customer support manned by a random generator script ;)

  • 34 Duzins // Nov 2, 2005 at 8:05 pm

Gosh, I thought godaddy sold theirs for like $7 or $8 a domain?

I am probably just TOTALLY uninformed

  • 35 Angsuman Chakraborty // Nov 2, 2005 at 8:05 pm

Oops. I didn’t read it properly. Your one year price actually translates to 29$.

I agree with Duzins that it is significantly higher than baseline rate of Godaddy.

Normally services from domain registrar don’t matter much to most people. Also it is mostly a one time effort.

Personally I think 18-20 $ (USD) would be the best that is bearable even with drop-dead-service.

  • 36 Nick // Nov 2, 2005 at 8:32 pm

Thanks Angsuman, that’s useful feedback. Is that pretty much what the rest of you feel?

Duzins - that’s the price on their site at the moment for .be’s. They are sold by the Belgium Registry at a much higher price than .com’s and other gTLDs.

  • 37 Duzins // Nov 2, 2005 at 8:33 pm

    gotcha :) sorry

  • 38 Duzins // Nov 2, 2005 at 8:37 pm

Well, here’s the thing. If that is comparable with godaddy, arguably who you’re going to be compared to, then having a year free, great service, and then the next year at normal, avg prices, I say “good deal”

  • 39 Angsuman Chakraborty // Nov 2, 2005 at 8:40 pm

IMHO domain business is more driven by volume than profit per domain. Automation is pretty much required to survive.

Most domain registrars try to make money through add-on services like web-hosting etc.

I see .in domains too selling at a higher price after privatisation. At one time they were free for Indian businesses.

AFAIAC a .com domain sounds better than .be or .it or .in :)

  • 40 Nick // Nov 2, 2005 at 8:45 pm

Heh - it’s a fair cop. I will bring down the price of the .be domains. We actually have a higher markup on them than our other domains. Our .com’s for example are £10 /yr and .co.uk £7 /yr.

Russian domains are our speciality here, very few people do those. I personally think a .ru is pretty much the ultimate when it comes to choosing your extension. Also stops people coming after your blog for legal proceedings… ;)

Anyway, we have the domain on the new platform now. I’m going to have to get that working! Cheers. Nick

  • 41 Duzins // Nov 2, 2005 at 8:48 pm

    Hi Triguenita

You need the international format. US is +1, full stop or period, then your regional and local no together without a space. Something like this: +1.1234123456

    Hope that helps

I’ve registered some domains and the 4th one, 6th one, 7th one, and 8th one have arrived. The rest have not. The earlier ones hadn’t arrived neither for some strange reason. I thought you processed the orders in order.

My domains include srouce.be, theclass.be, cforums.be, and fforums.be. Other ones that I supposedly have registered include phsource.be (before all of the ones listed above) and cvms.be (my 10th).

  • 64 Nick // Nov 19, 2005 at 1:24 pm

    Hi Harry,

Yes both phsource.be and cvms.be are not available. We are processing these in order but so are the hundreds of other registrars participating in this promotion. That means some of your applications will not be successful.

I wish we could send out emails on every unsuccessful application but with a queue of over 10′000 that is simply not practical. Our time is better spent on answering the questions from all the people we have successfully registered domains for.

I will write here again, please make sure that you use your correct information and a real email. There are many hundreds of applications that we are having to reject because of missing information. There are also many applications which never get confirmed by email (because the address does not exist).

The Belgium Registry demands that we only send them applications with real and full data on them. All others are rejected (where we try to correct them) or deleted.
